This illustration of an Australian lace monitor was inspired by one I saw resting on the trunk of a gum tree in the bush of the Warby Ranges in Victoria’s north-east. They’re pretty hard to see, as they are so well camouflaged, so it was a wonderful bit of serendipity. I just had to stay and enjoy it for a while.
